Baguazhang

Baguazhang

Baguazhang (eight changes/trigram palm) is one of the most secret and esoteric of the Chinese gongfu systems. Specializing in extremely powerful palm strikes, this system is renowned for its deceptive circular movements to evade and neutralize opponents.

The hypnotic coiling and turning of the bagua boxers have earned them the reputation as “Rolling Thunder Boxers” because of the fighter’s ability to flow around opponents like water and strike like lightning.

Designed to fight multiple opponents, bagua’s fundamental training method is “walking the circle.” This trains the practitioner in the concept of evasion through movement. The practitioner will learn to evade and redirect the opponent’s attack, seeking a position of tactical superiority outside the guard and ultimately behind the opponent. Great emphasis is placed on continuous movement, mobility and nimble footwork while rapidly moving in circular patterns.

All movements are intended to be smooth and coordinated, with the body employed as a whole. No reliance is placed on using muscle power generated from a single portion of the body. Through this discipline, the practitioners of baguazhang develop timing, agility, strength, and self-confidence.

Students will be taught Bagua forms, weapons, combative and self defense skills, traumatology, qigong, and more.

The constant turning and spinning movements of bagua stimulate the joints and intrinsic muscles not normally utilized in everyday activities. Compressing and relaxing the core muscles provides an internal organ massage, loosening stagnant energy allowing qi and blood to circulate smoothly.

Practicing bagua will provide a sense of total body connection while enhancing strength, coordination, and agility. It also breeds a calm, brave, and decisive spirit.

Bagua can be practiced alone or in pairs and can be very effective when used in fighting.
